A Museum For Living
Type: Multiresidential
Year: 2020
Site: Walker St, Northcote
The “Museum for Living” seeks to create a patchwork collective through the combination of vibrant expression and the exhibition of daily life. The building is a canvas to which residents are free to add their own personality and flare, allowing for changing layers of inhabitation to be reflected in the building’s materiality over time. Inside, the dwellings are simple yet adaptable and able to reflect the residents’ lifestyles while encouraging the sense of family and home.
Private areas are joined by communal gallery circulation allowing for interstitial space to become a play between rich inner life and bold public expression. Meanwhile, the deep facade with mesh screen allows for the building to dynamically open and close this performative relationship between the inside and outside depending on residents’ desires.
